So the other day I was cooking what I was hoping would be a nice juicy steak for dinner. But for some reason it didn't really look or smell very appetizing to me and the very thought of eating that slab of cow carcass really made me sick to my stomach. I took two bites and was done.
A similar thing happened the other day as I got ready to bite into my well-marinated chicken leg that had smelled oh so good in the oven. A big red vein was staring me right in the face - almost still pulsating as I set it down and decided to not take another bite.
This is when I decided it was time for me to stop being grossed out by my dinners and just cut out these things for good. It's been about a week since I've done this and I've likely eaten much more junk food than I should have, but it is also helping me to look at the way I eat and giving me more ideas on creative things I can make in lieu of meats.
I'll probably not give in completely and become a hardcore vegetarian, but I've decided to limit myself to chicken (breast only - no veins, kthanx) or fish only 1-2 times per week. I've been posting some of my meals on my facebook status only to realize that some of my friends would probably like to know the recipes I've been concocting, so as I try new things (or even if they aren't new and I put my own spin on them), I'll try to post them here.
What's your favorite type of donut?

I'm not much of a donut junkie, but my boyfriend loves 'em, so we get donuts a couple times a month. My favorite are the chocolate glazed French crullers. They aren't quite as sweet as regular donuts and they are fluffy and slightly doughy inside. Yum. Perfect with a hot latte!

I've been wanting to eat healthier here lately and so I'm trying to devise a plan of action. First off I am immediately cutting out all sour cream, soda, chips, french fries, and candy out of my diet. Second thing I want to do is reduce the amount of cheese, butter, sugar and meat that I eat. I like the idea of being vegetarian, but I just don't know if I could honestly give up chicken or shrimp. So what I'm doing is I'm going to attempt to give up red meat first, so after I finish off all the red meat in my refrigerator and freezer--there probably isn't much--I'm quitting! Now this isn't to say I won't have a weak moment every now and then for a tasty cheeseburger from Red Robin, but hey, I'm doing this for my health and not because I'm a hardcord animal rights activist and everyone has to indulge in forbidden things every once in a while, so I'm not going to sweat it too much right now. So for now, I'm not REALLY a vegetarian, but I'm going to eat vegetarian meals as much as I possibly can. I already order a lot of vegetarian stuff when I go out to eat, but I think I'm just going to be more conscious of including drastically less meat in my diet and adding far more fruits and veggies into it.
I want to do all this mainly for health reasons. Diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart problems are prevalent in my family and I need to be more pro-active while I am young to keep myself healthy so that I am not burdened with these kinds of problems as I get older. Obviously upping the amount of exercise I do each week will help reduce my risk as well, but I feel like exercising and eating well go hand in hand. Maybe eventually I'll cut chicken and fish from my diet after I get used to not eating beef and pork, but until then, I'm going to be really working on changing my lifestyle to be healthier!
So anyway, does anyone have any healthy eating tips especially if you are a vegetarian? I took a nutrition class my freshman year of college so I know all about combining foods to get the right proteins and stuff like that. I'm mostly just wondering about recipes or good things to order when you go out.
It has been years since I spent Thanksgiving with my family because I usually spend it with my in-laws who live out-of-state, but this year my brother's wife and I decided that we would do Thanksgiving dinner at my house instead of my mom's house. Turns out we make an awesome team in the kitchen. We were so proud of our cooking skills (and our garnishing skills) that we had to take photos of some of the food!
If you could open any sort of restaurant, what would it be like?
But that isn't really a dream restaurant idea. I have a real dream restaurant idea that I actually came up with when I was a sophomore in high school. We were in summer school taking economics and one of our assignments was to plan a restaurant: menu, logos, budgets, floorplans, staffing, etc. Well since two of us in our group had Filipino roots, we decided that we would create a modern Filipino restaurant for the project. Our design idea was that it would be semi-upscale and the inside of the restaurant would be decorated with giant aquariums with tropical fish.
The thing that was really holding us up the most was a name for the restaurant, and I'm not kidding, I seriously had a dream about the restaurant while we were working on the project and it was like this vision hit me - we'd call it Pinoy Paradise and it would be bright and sunny and tropical. I told my group about it the next day and they all absolutely loved the idea.
At then end of the project, we made some samples of what we would be serving at our restaurant and I'm pretty sure we made Lumpia - the most famous of all Filipino foods. If you haven't tried Lumpia, they are basically like a Chinese egg roll, but the ingredients are a little different. My mom makes them by grinding chicken or pork with carrots, cabbage and green onions and rolling it up into lumpia wrappers and frying them. Then you dip them in sweet and sour sauce or hot and sweet chili pepper sauce. You can also make them with shrimp. They are simply fabulous!
So anyway, I think if I were to go into the restaurant business, I would probably follow my idea to open a Filipino themed restaurant, but I think to make it more of a wide appeal, I would also include Hawaiian food and other Pacific Islander kinds of treats.
